Composite Materials with Electric/Magnetic Properties for Electromagnetic Shielding

Abstract
The paper presents a new type of composite material with electromagnetic shielding properties obtained by filling the perforations of metallic honeycomb panels with magnetic powders. By adding magnetic powders, an expansion of the electromagnetic shielding capability of honeycomb panels is achieved especially in the low frequency area. The shielding capabilities were tested by using a measurement system employing a coaxial TEM cell as sample holder. Here, a composite material consisting of an aluminium honeycomb panel with hexagonal waveguides as matrix and iron powder 99.62% with relative magnetic permeability μr = 5 as filler is described but it could be used any combination of metallic honeycomb panel and powder with magnetic properties. The composite material was tested at frequencies up to 1 GHz and the measurement results indicate that this type of composite material has the potential to be utilized in electromagnetic interference shielding applications.
