Light-Emitting Diodes (LEDs) for Lighting
(full text in Romanian)

Titu-Marius I. BĂJENESCU
Materials that make light-emitting diodes brighter and less power hungry open exciting new applications for semiconductor lamps. The emergence of high brightness emitters – with a number of advantages over conventional incadescent bulbs and halogene lamps – opened new markets to visible LEDs. White LEDs (WLEDs) are penetrating the portable and low wattage lighting market where ruggedness and compact source size are valued. Even though WLEDs may have a very long life, poorly designed WLED lighting systems can experience a short life. No industry standard exists for brightness levels.
